NSW SME Grants – What’s Currently Available

With COVID-19 showing no signs of slowing down and businesses struggling with staff shortages and supplier delays, here are all the grants and rebates currently available, including the recently announced $1B support package to help small and medium businesses affected by the Omicron outbreak.

The 2022 Small Business Support Program

Eligibility

  • have aggregated turnover of between $75,000 and $50M
  • Experience a minimum decline of 40% in turnover in January 2022 and first fortnight of February 2022 compared to same period in 2021 or 2020
  • Have been operating in NSW since 1 January 2021
  • For employing businesses – maintain employee headcount from 30 January to 28 February 2022
  • For non-employing businesses (ie. sole traders) – show that the primary business income source (50% or more of total income) for the associated person. Only one business can be claimed.

Payment Amount

  • One payment covering the 4-week period of February 2022
  • Payment will range from $750 – $5,000 per week. It will be equivalent to 20% of weekly payroll.
  • Non employing businesses will receive a payment of $500 per week

Next Steps

  • To apply, you need to submit your most recently lodged Australian income tax return with TFNs redacted demonstrating the aggregated turnover for the 2020 or 2021 financial years
  • For registered charities, you need to submit your ACNC annual information statement
  • Provide evidence of how your weekly payroll amount was calculated through either your most recent BAS/IAS, 2020-21 payroll tax reconciliation or a copy of your business’s payroll report filed using Single Touch Payroll

Small Business Fees and Charges Rebate – now extended to cover Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs)

Eligibility

  • Have total Australian wages below the NSW Government 2021 payroll tax threshold of $1.2M
  • Have an ABN registered in NSW or business premises physically located and operating in NSW

Payment Amount

  • The maximum $2,000 rebate will be increased to $3,000 in late March
  • You can submit multiple claims until the value of $3000 us reached
  • Employing businesses will be able to claim half of the costs for Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs)
  • Only one $3000 rebate per ABN

Alfresco Restart Rebate

Eligibility

  • Must have an active ABN held before 1 June 2021
  • Have an aggregated turnover less than $10M inclusive for the year ended 30 June 2021
  • Be a small or medium food and beverage business defined by at least one of the following ANZSIC codes: 4511 cafes and restaurants, 4520 pubs, taverns and bars, 4530 clubs (hospitality), 4400 Accomodation (hotel and motel), 1212 Beer manufacturing, 1213 spirit manufacturing, 1214 wine and other alcoholic beverage manufacturing
  • Have or will incur eligible costs and expenses for opening or expanding your outdoor dining area from 14 October 2021 to 30 April 2022
  • Have development approval from council, place management NSW or private holder (where applicable)
  • Have approval for liquor license boundary changes (where applicable)

Payment Amount

  • $5000 rebate

Next Steps

  • In order to apply, you will need proof of identity, a MyServiceNSW Account and also evidence to support your eligibility such as a letter of authority, profit and loss statement, accountant’s letter, FY2021 income tax return, etc
  • Registrations for the rebate will close once 5,000 businesses have successfully registered. As of writing, registrations are currently still open.

Commercial Landlord Hardship Fund

Eligibility

  • Must be a landlord of a property in NSW
  • Have an agreement to provide rental relief to tenants from 13 July 2021
  • Have no claimed land tax relief between 1 July 2021 and 31 December 2021
  • More than 50% of your total income is derived from gross rental income for 2020 or 2021 financial year

Payment Amount

  • Up to $3,000 per month per property
  • Grants will be paid as lump sum for the rent waived from 1 August to 14 November 2021

    • A contract for sale of land, 2021 council rates notice or Revenue NSW client and correspondence ID to show property is in NSW
    • Landlord’s 2020 or 2021 income tax return
    • Current impacted lease agreement
    • Tenancy agreement providing rental reduction, rental ledgers or a letter from the property manager

Jobs Plus Program

Eligibility

  • Must start hiring before 31 December 2022 and all staff must also live and be paid in NSW
  • At least 30 new staff full-time equivalent staff must be hired and onboarded by 30 June 2021

  • Payroll tax relief for up to 4 years once business has employed 30 new full time equivalent staff
  • Subsidised training package rebates
  • Rebates for approved projects
  • Access to subsidised, short-term Government accommodation and spaces for up to 2 years

Export Assistance Grant

Eligibility

  • Must be based in NSW
  • Have a registered ABN and be registered for GST as at 1 August 2019
  • Currently exporting, or were exporting prior to impacts of COVID-19, bushfires and drought
  • Employ a minimum of 3 full-time equivalent staff at the time of application
  • Own the goods/services to be exported
  • Have an annual turnover of up to $100M. If greater than this sum, you must demonstrate export turnover has declined by more than 30% in the 2020 financial year

Benefits

  • Receive a grant of up to $10,000 for export assistance
  • This grant will be provided as reimbursement of 50% of eligible expense already paid since 1 January 2020.
