Tax Office Scam Alert

Updated February 14th 2020

We have recently become aware of a scam currently in operation where the callers claim to be from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

They state that there is an outstanding debt owing to them and you may be under investigation to be audited, face criminal charges or that a warrant will be issued for your arrest. They then proceed to demand a sum of money to be paid over the phone to avoid having to go to court.

These fraudsters are quite sophisticated in their approach and we are aware of at least one instance where they have high jacked an accounting firm’s telephone number using software to make it look like they are calling from the accounting firm.

As your Registered Tax Agent we actively monitor your tax obligations and if there were any issues as serious as these fraudsters purport, either one of the CIB partners or a CIB team member that you are familiar with would have made contact with you personally.

If you receive one of these calls we recommend that you ask for the person’s contact details so that you can call them back. If you do they will usually hang up.

Under no circumstances should you provide them with any personal information or agree to make any payments without discussing your obligations with CIB.

If you have any concerns about your tax obligations please contact one of the helpful team members at CIB who are familiar with your affairs.
